Scotland's Heavy Pettin' released two hard rockin' but remarkably polished albums for Polydor in the early 80's. This, the first of them, was produced by Queen's Brian May and sets the band's stall out admirably. At the time, the band sat shoulder to shoulder with Def Leppard as the British hard rock act 'most likely to…' Well, we know how that story ends.

'Tunnel Vision' - Can You Believe Your Eyes & Ears? The Hoodoo Gurus first DVD is the most extensive record of the life of a band yet undertaken in Australia. All of the Gurus clips have been compiled here along with live versions of most of their live favourites from ‘Stoneage Romeos’ to ‘Mach Schau’.

It takes a lot of courage for a band like the Hoodoo Gurus to put together a comprehensive DVD. In their 23 years, the Gurus’ have been recognised all over the planet. They have toured extensively across North and South America and Europe. In America especially the Hoodoo Gurus have been recognised for their live shows and they have steadily built a fan base.

The Hoodoo Gurus are like the perfect dinner guest - they were always asked back. Their live shows are legendary. Throughout the 80s and 90s one of life certainties was that the Hoodoo Gurus would put on a killer show. They have steadily built a fan base, and the Spit the Dummy tour was the biggest tour by an Australian band in 1997/8. ‘Tunnel Vision’ includes a selection of live Gurus videos across their entire career.

‘Tunnel Vision’ starts with Le Hoodoo Gurus first video for ‘Leilani’ and follows the group through the seedy pubs of inner Sydney to stages across the globe. There are tours with the Bangles, meetings with Aliens, with greyhounds, biker gangs and other less savoury types until they finally bring it all home at the Big Day Out.

Visual aesthetics have been an important aspect of the Hoodoo Gurus and these videos touch on all the bases - great performances, trashy movies, celebrating the ‘60s and ‘70s.

While the hits are familiar, some of the clips like ‘In the Wild’ shot at the Southern Cross give a real sense of what the Sydney post-punk scene was like. Other rarities include ‘Turn Up Your Radio’ where the Gurus meet up with the Masters Apprentices for a re-recording of this seminal Australian classic. ‘Little Drummer Boy (Up The Khyber)’ is a seldom seen Christmas instrumental.

John Whitteron is a Sydney-based filmmaker who was one of the pioneers of the video clip and the Gurus had a long and fruitful relationship with him. Original guru Kimble Rendall left the band to make films (he directed Cut, and led the 2nd unit on the Matrix films and I Robot) but he has stayed in touch and directed four clips (‘1000 Miles Away’, ‘A Place In The Sun’, ‘You Open My Eyes’ and ‘When You Get To California’).

Of most interest to the fans is the selection of live cuts. They’re raw and rough and exciting, filmed in small clubs and on festival stages they capture the tightness and explosive power of the Gurus in their natural environment.

‘Tunnel Vision’ also includes a documentary about the Gurus including interviews with the band, producer Charles Fisher, Vicki Peterson of the Bangles, Kram from Spiderbait, Kim Salmon of the Scientists, Andy Strachan of the Living End and Rusty Hopkinson of You Am I.

‘Tunnel Vision’ is three hours on the couch with one of the world’s greatest rock & roll bands.
