Warren Haynes Presents: The Benefit, Vol. 2 is the second album to be culled from Haynes' annual Christmas Jam benefit concerts. The first, Wintertime Blues: The Benefit Concert, released by Evil Teen Records in 2000, chronicled the 1999 show. This one is taken from the 2000 concert, held December 21 at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, NC, with all proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. Haynes, the Gov't Mule and Allman Brothers Band guitarist, leads things off with a couple of acoustic songs before turning things over to the Chris Duarte Band, which makes a strong impression with a version of the Band of Gypsys favorite "Who Knows." The Bottle Rockets, who follow, have more of a traditional mainstream rock sound than the Southern rock/jam band style favored by the other performers. The Christmas Jams are famous for arranging the temporary reunions of disbanded groups, and in 2000 the Aquarium Rescue Unit re-formed for an extended set, joined by Blues Traveler's John Popper on the lengthy final cut, "Time Is Free/Jack the Rabbit." Gov't Mule, sadly minus Allen Woody, who had died the previous August, is next, with Popper returning to the stage and also accompanying a set by Kevn Kinney of Drivin' n' Cryin'. Much about the Christmas Jams recalls the Allman Brothers Band, and finally this one brings the Allmans on formally, starting with Gregg Allman, accompanied by Haynes, doing "Come and Go Blues," followed by the whole band for a four-song set concluding with "Statesboro Blues." The concert is loose and friendly, with musicians coming and going, and is given over to extended performances of favorite songs, along with some individual indulgences. Wailing, distorted guitars and driving rhythms delineate compositions that are brilliantly constructed, compelling and concise. BONUS TRACK Love Is All

This DVD release is a minor sensation: for the first time in this format, the complete version of Eddie Hardin's musical interpretation of 'Wind In the Willows', performed live on stage for German Television in 1991, and featuring an all-star cast of British performers.

Eddie Hardin replaced Stevie Winwood in the Spencer Davis Group but left that group in 1969 to form a partnership with drummer Peter York. Their duo Hardin & York received great acclaim during a brief but remarkable career.

Hardin then embarked on a solo career and also got involved in session work with the likes of Deep Purple bass player Roger Glover and his 'Butterfly Ball' project. Eddie co-wrote the hit 'Love Is All'. He also worked as a producer for Iris Williams and Mike D'Abo during this period.

The musician credits on this album reads like a "who's who" of British rock and includes Donovan, Tony Ashton, Jon Lord (Deep Purple), Graham Bonnet (Rainbow), Zak Starkey (The Who), Don Airey (Rainbow, Deep Purple), Denny Laine (Moody Blues), Ray Fenwick (Ian Gillan Band, Forcefield), Maggie Bell, and Danny Thompson (Pentangle, John Martyn).

Roger headlined the Heineken Night of the Proms in 1991 and 1995. He also continued to record in his studio, hoping to capture his music's energy and vitality on tape. Meanwhile, Roger's son Andrew had formed his own band Chode and was gaining regional recognition as a gifted musician. In 1996, Rites of Passage, conceived the idea of having Roger and Andrew perform together live. The purpose was two-fold: to re-ignite Roger's musical energy and to honour and recognize Andrew as a peer, both personally and musically. As Roger explains, "Rites of Passage honours Andrew for what he's awoken in me-how simple life is and how one's relationship with music is when your 16 years old. To be around someone with that much drive and passion, especially a son, is like a wonderful mirror to remind me, 'Hey, you've got to get out there and just have fun.'

With Andrew due back in school in three months, Roger faced the daunting task of assembling the musicians, booking the venues, and recording the concerts. Roger recruited long time friends Mikail Graham and John Helliwell as well as Jeff Daniel and Rich Stanmyre, both respected studio musicians. Moving at break-neck speed, it was only through a spirit of cooperation that the band pulled off six live shows in Northern California. There was such synergy that Roger views Rites of Passage as more of collaboration than a solo work. Thus the album includes two original compositions by Mikail and one by Andrew. Although three of the shows were recorded, all the songs on Rites of Passage come from the final performance on 2 August 1996, when the energy and excitement of a father and son performing together in a concert setting were magically captured. On that night, Roger attained the exacting standards that had eluded him for almost a decade. Old favorites such as "The Logical Song" sound fresh and buoyant, while newly composed pieces such as "Every Trick in the Book" sound dynamic and spontaneous.
